The rise and rise of Ongata Rongai as Nairobi’s bedroom town

Ongata Rongai town has acquired the name Nairobi’s bedroom. This is owing to the fact that most people working or doing business in Nairobi, come back to their houses in Ongata Rongai in the evening.
Located in Kajiado County, Ongata Rongai town is situated 17 kilometres south of Nairobi and west of the Ngong Hills.
Known locally as Rongai, the populated town is a fast-growing community with a vast number of commercial banks including Barclays, Equity, Kenya Commercial Bank, HCF, Bank of Africa among many others.
It also boasts of impressive healthcare facilities such as the renowned Karen Hospital, Aga Khan Hospitial, Meridian Hospital and Gertrude Children’s Hospital.
For a fancy weekend or night out, one could check into the Legend Club, located near the upmarket area of Tuskys or Ladida Lounge.
From many parts of Ongata Rongai, a traveller enjoys a bird’s eye view of the surrounding plains. It has become a busy hub for businessmen and investors, keen to have a piece of the rapid expansion of the town.
The town’s rapidly growing population has attracted the attention of real estate developers, hoteliers and investors in the food business, night clubs and restaurants, petrol stations, furniture workshops, metal works, transport, educational institutions among others.
Intense competition in the hostel business has seen improved and modern resting lounges coming up where one can watch a wide variety of programming available on DSTV or stream their favourite series, movies or music using freely available WIFI.
Most of the hostels in Rongai are surrounded by picturesque gardens and furnished with charming furniture, giving it an excellent ambience suitable for unwinding with a good book or hang out with friends. One can also access a good old barbeque facility provided by the hostel. Some hostels provide breakfast and supper during the week and three meals on weekends and public holidays as well as transport. Other hostels have washing machines.
Rongai Matatus are among the most decorated in Nairobi’s booming transport business given the fact that, Magadi Road has been refurbished and the drainage system done. Before, potholse gave the business a hard time while drainage was a total mess.
In the business, many of these Nganyas are fitted with sound systems which play loud music popular with the youthful generation. The buses are also fitted with big screens as well as smaller ones on the back of the seats.
In Ongata Rongai most of the entertainment joints have several large TV screens, bouncing castles for children; swimming pools and well stocked restaurants that over a variety of drinks.
The carpentry and wielding workshops are specialists in creative designs of different beds, tables, desks, chairs, sofa sets and wardrobes, similar to products that are usually found in supermarkets.
If you need your child to train Karate, Judo, Swimming or Music, there are many institutions offering such opportunities.
Interestingly, Rongai is also home to some of the biggest names in show biz including Gloria Muliro, Timmy DiTat and Tokodi. The late Emmanuel Makori aka Ayieyaa was also a resident of Rongai.
