A committee that was formed to identify a new site to relocate Rongai’s Soko Mjinga is expected to table their report on relocation of the traders this week.

The report will entail identifying a new site for the traders whose stalls were demolished a few weeks ago by KeNHA.

Kajiado North Member of Parliament Joseph Manje said the traders will be allowed to operate in Soko Mjinga as the committee solves the issues surrounding it. The committee consists of Kajiado County Government officials, traders and MP’s representative.

Speaking after awarding CDF cheques for various projects in Ongata Rongai and Nkaimurunya Wards, Manje said the government will continue with the demolition exercise for expansion of Magadi Road.

Nkaimurunya MCA James Waisha said the committee will identify land in his Ward for possible allocation. The county government is yet to disclose the amount of money it will set aside to relocate the traders.

The demolition of the market sparked protests with traders barricading the road, forcing police to lob teargas to disperse them.

Thursday evening check indicated that few traders who had relocated to Makaburini during protests are back at Soko Mjinga selling their wares in make-shift structures.
