Shock and unanswered questions as woman is set on fire in Ongata Rongai

The burning of a woman in Ongata Rongai has left the community feeling numb with shock, worry and disbelief.

The middle-aged woman who was identified as Mary was set ablaze by a boda boda rider at midnight opposite Nairobi Women Hospital Rongai.

There has been scant information on why the woman was killed, no one wants to be on the record to share information on why she was killed due to for fear of unknown.

According to an eye witness who sought anonymity the suspect poured petrol on the woman and set her on fire while she was going home at midnight after closing her business , she used to sell groceries on Kandisi road opposite Fatima hospital.

โ€œThe man followed her from behind and poured petrol on her before setting her on fire, she was rescued after falling into a ditch opposite Nairobi Women Hospital,โ€ the eye witness said.

The woman was taken to Nairobi Women Hospital and later Kenyatta National Hospital where she succumbed to injuries.

The mother of one will be laid to rest in Kangundo in Machakos County on Tuesday ,25th July 25, 2023.

According to sources the suspect who is still at large is allegedly involved in sell of illegal drugs in the area.

โ€œWe have drug peddlers here and the suspect is one of them, we want police to take action, a normal person cannot do such Inhuman thing,we suspect is hiding in Meru where he hails from ,โ€ said a resident.

Ongata Rongai OCS Mathews Masaga confirmed that the suspect is still at large, they are yet to get reasons behind the attack but they suspect the woman may have been killed in relationship issues.

According to Kajiado North Law Society of Kenya chairperson Chris Oeri, Ongata Rongai tops in cases of gender-based violence in Kajiado North Constituency, the cases have been on the increase.

In the past two months five people including four children have been killed in GBV related cases.
