Residents of Kware Nkaimurunya Ward were compelled to sleep outside in the cold on Monday following an outbreak of fire that razed down properties worth millions.

The incident took place at 7pm, the fire emanated from one of the households. The cause was not established as some of the residents argued it exploded from a gas cylinder whereas others say it was an electricity explosion.

A resident Suzan Wairimu, whose houses got burnt said she had arrived home from work only for a few minutes to hear screaming from neighbors.

“We fetched water and tried to put off the fire but our efforts went futile,’ she said.

At least four households managed to rescue their properties with assistance from outsiders as the rest were burnt down into ashes.

A woman broke her leg after she jumped from her house, she was taken to a Nairobi hospital for treatment.

The fire brigade vehicle from Ngong arrived at the scene to contain the fire but it never managed following shortage of water that made it to drive several trips to fetch water and extinguish the fire. Nairobi County fire brigade vehicle was also involved in putting off the fire.

Police arrived at the scene to control the crowd’s movements and beef up security on properties that were rescued. County government of Kajiado officials said the victims are set to be compensated by the county emergency unit.Investigations are underway to establish the main cause of the fire.
