The repair of Kwekwe killer bridge on Magadi Road connecting Kiserian and Ongata Rongai towns has kicked off.
The exercise was launched by Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary James Macharia who said the work will take two days to complete.
Macharia said the emergency repairs will be done while awaiting upgrading of Magadi road to a dual carriage; the government is planning to award the tender for the expansion of the road.
The bridge is impassable during rain seasons. Many people including school going children have lost their lives while trying to cross bridges in Rongai and Kiserian.
Residents recently held demonstrations after the death of eight people on May 3rd 2018, in Kandisi, Kwekwe and Acacia bridges.
Through #IfikieUhuru the locals urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to honour his promise of upgrading the Magadi road. They also alleged that some contractors were doing shoddy work in the towns.
They threatened to protest over the condition of Gataka Road which they say is impassable. The road is under Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA).
The National Government through KURA had awarded a tender to a contractor to tarmac the road.
