Kajiado county new land policy will secure community land from grabbers, County Assembly Speaker Johnson Osoi has said.
The County Assembly introduced a policy to tackle
land issues that had become a major headache in Kajiado County. The Land and
Physical Planning Department has authority to control public land that was
inherited from the County Council.
Osoi noted that public land posed major challenges including double allocation
due to County Government inheritance of the land from County Council.
“After Kajiado County Assembly approved the land policy, the land
registrar introduced new generation allotment letters that act as title deed
and are recognized by any financial institution, this will sort out land disputes in the county,” he observed.
Speaking during an interview with County
Press in his office in Kajiado Town while commenting on the 2010 Constitution
achievements after 10 years, Osoi said
lang fragmentation into plots has reduced productivity and that’s why land
registrar came up with county planning to control sub-division of land into
plots.
Community Land Act 2016, has given the County Government mandate to identify,
recognize, protect and register community land because most of the community
land is under group ranches, said Osoi.
And through the constitution,
County Assembly has the mandate to come up with bills and policies that govern
land matters.
He termed the constitution as one of the best gifts to the Kenyanpeople despite
a few challenges.
He lauded the current county assembly for putting up more effort to come up with private bills such as Water Harvesting Bill.
Kajiado County through County Assembly was the first county to pass anti-FGM law.
He noted that Article 196 of the 2010 constitution, gives the public power for public participation in any activities taking place under devolved units.
After two terms serving as speaker of Kajiado County, Osoi says it is time to serve the people of Kajiado County better as a senator. He say he will vie for senatorial seat come 2022. “I’m well established, attained all the qualification. I believe and have conviction that I have what it takes to serve the people of this County to become the next senator of Kajiado County,” he said.
