Kajiado North Constituency MP Joseph Manje, MCAs Mwathi Pere ( Rongai ) and James Waisha (Nkaimurunya) have distanced themselves from demolition of Soko Mjinga market.
The leaders said they were not informed by KeNHA about the demolition which was done on Wednesday night.
In a meeting with the traders’ committee they allowed those affected to continue operating along the Magadi Road as they seek audience with Governor Joseph ole Lenku.
They said they will hold a meeting with the Governor on Tuesday. The traders had refused to relocate to Makaburini grounds and want the county Government to purchase alternative land along Magadi road.
They claim Makaburini ground cannot accommodate all the 5,000 traders and is inaccessible since its feeder roads are pathetic; they also said they cannot use a place that was used as a cemetery.
They questioned why the county Government is yet to purchase land and build a modern market for Nkaimurunya Ward.
In a rejoinder, the county government through office of the Governor maintained that the traders must relocate to Makaburini.
“We wish to ask Kajiado residents to support the National Government’s road projects which will open up the County for more trading activities and reduce congestion and endless traffic jams in our town.” part of the statement read.
The statement stated that the demolition was an indicator that the construction of dual Magadi road will start any time from now. KeNHA had issued a notice on 2017 for the demolition and had marked structures on road reserve two weeks ago.
