A Kajiado North sub county youth has accused an officer in Kajiado registration of persons office for allegedly demanding a bribe to process birth certificate of his child.
Samuel Maina said he was asked to give a bribe but had to report the matter to the County Commissioner “I have never felt this low…I really need the birth certificate but I couldn’t bring myself to that level. Right now am at the County Commissioner to file my complaint,” he said.
After recording the case Maina received the birth certificate in 30 minutes time, the matter is now with the disciplinary committee. Applicants have been protesting the slow manner in which the birth certificates are issued by the officers.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i had visited Kajiado County last week and gave a directive through the Director of Civil Registration Services to issue birth certificates effective from 1st July to 31st July 2019.
Matiang’i , ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru and governor Joseph Ole Lenku had launched Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) to hasten the processing of the documents and reduce backlog of about 1.3 million applications , in Kajiado County there is a backlog of 10,234 applications,50 per cent has been cleared.
Number of agents claiming to help people to get the documents in 24 hours have been on the increase , it is believed some of them are involved in bribery in the county officers in order to acquire the documents on time and frustrate those who apply without involving them.
