Invest in solar powered irrigation, Kajiado govt told

Kajiado County Businessman Anthony Keen has urged the national government and county government of Kajiado to invest in solar powered irrigation to increase agricultural production.

Keen said the governments should invest in the new model to enable smallholder farmers in the county to adopt the sustainable irrigation solutions to solve food and water crisis the County.

“We have to solve these issues once and for all, the solar powered irrigation is the only savior since is not expensive to maintain,” he said. He noted that the county is facing food crisis which will worsen in the future if action is not taken.

Keen was speaking in Olkiramatian  Magadi Ward after donating food and water to the locals, the area has been affected by drought, residents walk for kilometers to access water.

The residents said the governments are yet to come up with measures to ensure that they have clean water.

A resident Philip Simerei said water in the area is salty with clean water rivers drying up, they do not practice farming due to lack of water, others are forced to migrate to places that have water.
