Bodaboda Operators in Kajiado County have directed the county government of Kajiado to fix issues they have been raising before collecting taxes.
Led by Alex Gitare who is the chair Kajiado County Branch Boda-Boda Safety Association of Kenya the operators said they will not accept being taxed without provision of services by the county.
The county government had demanded the operators to pay a monthly parking fee of sh 250, this is in line with Kajiado County Finance Act 2020 part 1 of the Seventh schedule.
In a letter dated 10th August 2023 from Director Revenue Kajiado North sub county to all motorbikes Saccos and stages, the director ordered an operation this month to check compliance.
“The roads are pathetic and the county has no site where they can rent us, we operate from road reserves,” Gitare said. He noted that they spend a lot of money to fix their motorbikes and blame the county for impassable roads.
The chair said they do not know how the county government arrived at sh 250 per month when they had proposed sh 1,500 per year, he noted the monthly collection will contribute to corruption in the county.
“Let them try to harass us they have never recognized us and they have never held a meeting to address issues we raise, getting appointment in the county has been unfruitful, even the local leaders nowadays do not involve elected officials in meetings,” Gitare said.
He urged the county to take a leaf from Nairobi County government where he said boda-boda operators are recognized and respected by authorities, they are taken to trainings and involve din county development projects.
