Ongata Rongai Ward traders have abandoned Rongai market and they are now selling on road reserves, several traders have constructed stalls along the roads in the town.
The traders chairman Antonio Kamau said the Kajiado county government has failed to ensure the traders operate from the market.
‘Few traders operate in the market since there is no business here, we told the county to bring them back but we are yet to see them take action, some of them bribe county officers to put their stalls along the roads,” he said.
Residents had allocated money in ward level that tarmacked a road around the market to attract buyers but few traders relocated to the market.
Speaking during a budget forum Kamau said the county should use flagship money to build a modern market like the proposed Kitengela market, on Fridays’ budget proposals the traders proposed putting up of a shade for the market since the allocation of sh 30 million per ward is too little for a modern market.
Rongai ward MCA Mwathi Pere said his ward has never received a flagship project, he urged governor Joseph ole Lenku to allocate money for such projects this financial year.
During the meeting Consumer Grassroots Association (CGA) official Jacob Oyugi accused a county officer of intimidating him through a phone call for asking “tough questions”on Wednesday forum in Nkaimurunya Ward.
The official had questioned county officers why they were not aware of projects status in the area and why they were playing blame games with contractors who had abandoned projects, instead of taking action since they had awarded them tenders.
County treasury official Marry Ann Kariuki defended the county, she said they are in the process of coming up with project implementation program to monitor projects.
