Ongata Rongai residents have voluntarily started removing structures on Magadi road reserve after being marked by KeNHA. Several containers have already been removed.

KeNHA officials accompanied by police continued marking the buildings on Wednesday and  also held meetings with owners of storey buildings in the town.

Building owners who have protested plans of demolishing their buildings were required to present ownership documents and the map that they used when putting up the structures.

The demolitions will pave way for the expansion of Magadi road Bomas to Corner Baridi,

An official from KeNHA said the demolition will continue on Thursday. “Tomorrow we are starting from Kiserian, ensure the structures are removed,” he added..

The official said their seniors had directed them to remove the structures so as not to give the constructor of the 27 km road hard time during the construction. The official said the expansion of the road is expected to begin late this year.

KeNHA had started by demolishing Rongai’s Soko Mjinga market but the traders have already returned to the road reserve putting up temporary structures.
