Kajiado North Sub-County residents will have to wait for more years to have a sewerage treatment plant.
In Ongata Rongai and Ngong towns there in not yet a design to put up a sewerage plant, a proposal to have land in Olekasasi to be used as a treatment plant did not mature since the land has already been grabbed and locals want it repossessed to put up a learning institution since is surrounded by estates, the land was set aside by Olkejuado County Council for dumpsite.
Lack of sewerage in the town has caused property owners to divert sewer water to roads , these has affected the environment besides caused health problems , many cases of cholera outbreak have been reported in the cosmopolitan towns Ngong and Ongata Rongai .
County Director of Medical Services, Dr. Ezekiel Kapkoni says cases of cholera in the county are due to poor sanitation which includes lack of sewer system in many towns, some residents do not use latrines.
Kiserian sewerage treatment plant in Rimpa area whose designs were completed 10 years ago has stalled even after compensation of residents living in the site to allow the construction of the modern sewerage.
In his statement to the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Environment and Natural Resources in questions raised by area MP Joseph Manje on why the project had stalled since 2014, Cabinet secretary for Water and sanitation Simon Chelugui said the treatment plant progress has been slow due to Environmental Licensing issues and Kiserian Project Stakeholders Court case objecting its location but the issues were solved and the works commenced on December 2015, a total of 4.25 km lateral sewers were laid in Kiserian town
He said the project is 34% complete as by May 2019; the Athi Water Services Board had extended the completion of the work to January 2020. The contractor had successfully acquired the new site in December 2016.
“The contractor has mobilized and is currently working at the waste water treatment plant and staff houses as the implementing agency finalizes compensation of 93 Project Affected Persons(PAPs) for the way leaves for truck sewers and Kiserian dam cut off drain,” he said .
The construction of the plant started in 2014 after completion of the design in 2009 due to lack of funds. The project is funded by National Government at cost of Sh 709,380, 957 the contract was issued to M/S Stansha Limited (Contractor). Up to date the value of work done and paid is Sh 123Million.
The CS said the slow payout of the funds is due to collapse of Chase Bank and AWSB’s recalling of guarantees that had been issued by the bank.
The project entails trunk and lateral sewers that is 12 km long a 10,000m3 day waste water treatment plant , Kiserian dam cut off drain and auxiliary works ,laboratory , fencing and staff houses.
