Ilmarba Rescue Centre in the interior of Matapato North Ward caters for teenage girls facing the threat of Female Genital Mutilation and early marriages.
According to Rev Haron Oloruma of Antioch Bible Community Church centre, the facility needs support from donors and other well-wishers. The centre, located 50 kilometres from Ilbissil town, was established through the efforts of Rev Oloruma who is its patron. It was started with the aim of rescuing the disadvantaged girls in the vast Matapato region who faced threats of early marriages and FGM, he stated.
When County Press visited the centre, Rev Oloruma explained that he came up with the noble dream and shared it with his church members. “The members concurred with me that there was an urgent need for a centre to sensitize locals to discard repugnant customs and traditional taboos so as to safeguard girl-child education for better life in future,” he stated.
The centre was launched back in 2017 by the then Interior cabinet secretary, the late Maj-Gen Joseph Nkaissery who was the chief guest at its launch.
“Up to now, the centre’s operations are conducted under the supervision of the church with no donors. Many young girls are rescued by at the Kenya and Tanzania border as they leave the country
