Property worth thousands of shillings was recently destroyed by floods at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission offices in Isinya, Kajiado County.
Other than electronic equipment, which included KIEMs kits and Thuraya phones used in areas not connected with mobile telephony network, office documents and ballot papers used in the August 2017 general election were damaged.
Kajiado East Constituency returning officer, Sylvia Maritim, counting the losses said she was thankful to God that there are no pending election cases to warrant a demand for the ballot papers by the courts.
“It would have been disastrous for us at IEBC had there been pending election petition cases,” said Maritim.
The local IEBC boss was forced to hire people to clean the mess caused by flood water, and while they were cleaning a large python emerged from the wet files.
The snake later escaped towards the Isinya River before administration officers from a nearby deputy county commissioner’s office were called in to shoot it.
Also affected by the floods are the adjacent children department office and the office of the County Commissioner. The road leading to the sub county headquarters was equally submerged in floods.
Meanwhile, a bridge leading to Olturoto market in Kaputiei north Ward in Isinya Sub-county was washed away by floods.
