Consumers in Kajiado County have raised concern over the quality of milk sold in the County.
They asked concerned authorities to ensure the milk is safe for human consumption before it is sold to citizens.
Geoffrey Getonga a resident of Kajiado North said some residents want to make quick money by selling contaminated milk.
Kenya Dairy Board officials who attended a consumer forum said they are doing milk surveillance to ensure milk sold is safe for consumption.
They said laws on sale of milk should be amended as there are no laws on how milk Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) should be operated.
Consumer Grassroots Association had invited the board to educate the public on milk safety.
The association Director Alice Kemunto said consumers should report to the association any concerns they have on safety of the products they consume for them to follow up and take action.
The consumers were told to ask for permits from milk vendors before purchasing milk and also raise questions on the hygiene of milk selling houses.
Area Member of County Assembly Mwathi Pere said the board was not doing enough in enforcing standards and asked them to carry out impromptu visits for safety of products to be maintained.
Pere said the milk consumed in the country is not enough and more people should invest in milk production sector.
“Those selling milk using ATMs should get permits and let consumers know the source of their milk because Kajiado County does not produce enough milk and depends on other counties,” said Perre.
