Two Kajiado MPs have urged residents in the region to be in their homes during this year’s census or risk their constituencies being struck off.
Kajiado West MP, George Sunkuyia and his Kajiado South counterpart, Katoo ole Metito, claimed that 27 constituencies that are protected by the law may be struck off ahead of 2022 general election.
Metito explained that at the end of the census in August this year, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will sit next year to review all the 27 constituencies that do not have enough population and line them up for dilation.
The leaders spoke in Lenkisim village in Entonet ward during the memorial service for the late Kajiado chief, Lenku ole Mpaa, at the home of governor Joseph Lenku.
“We are appealing to our people to turn up in their numbers and take part in the exercise that takes place every 10 years. In the last census, most of our pastoralists were away with their livestock in Tanzania, Kwale, and Kilifi because of drought. We are telling them to be at their home area during that census so they can save their constituencies from being collapsed,” said Metito.
Kajiado County is hit annually by drought around August and movement of pastoralists in search of water and pasture is uncontrollable.
Sunkuyia appealed to the government to undertake the census exercise in a most transparent manner so as to reflect the correct number of people in all the existing constituencies.
