Coalitions, parties to field candidates in new law

President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed the recently enacted Political Parties (Amendment) Bill of 2021 into law.

The Act allows formation of coalitions, agreements will be deposited with Registrar of Political Parties 120 days to the general election. It details that a political party may become a corporate member of another political party in accordance with the constitution rules and procedures of the political party, the coalitions and parties are allowed to field candidates.

This now allows for registration of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s Azimio La Umoja movement as coalition and Kenya Kwanza Alliance by Deputy President William Ruto

The law also empowers the Registrar of Political Parties to certify political party membership lists and nomination rules among other transformative provisions aimed at strengthening management of political parties and enhancing democracy.

The decision to become a corporate member of another political party shall be a resolution of the party organs in a meeting and shall bed duly executed by the party officials authorized to execute the agreements on behalf of the party.

Political parties’ funds will now be distributed according to numbers of votes a party garnered in election, number of special groups elected among other set rules.

Apolitical party will only allow a registered member to participate in party primaries. The political party register will be presented by Registrar of Parties 21 days before the date of nominations.

Kajiado County gubernatorial aspirant former Kajiado County governor David Nkedianye (ODM) says the new act is advantageous allows for parties and coalitions to field candidates, he said the focus is now to ensure Odinga is the fifth president of Kenya.

Nkedianye had entered into a deal with MP Joseph Manje to deputize him, incumbent governor Joseph ole Lenku is in Jubilee with Tarayia ole Kores in ODM.

In Ruto’s camp all the three aspirants MP Katoo ole Metito, MP Peris Tobiko and Francis Meja are in UDA Party.

Azimio la Umoja Movement will have one gubernatorial candidate, it will use consensus or nominations to pick the candidate for the Azimio ticket in the 2022 general election.
